Ohio talent will entertain at Pride Holiday festival

Columbus In addition to featured performer Taylor Dayne, this year's Pride Holiday will feature a line-up of talent from right here in Ohio.

Anne E. DeChant

Anne E. DeChant, founding member and driving force behind Cleveland's Odd Girl Out, has taken a solo career. Her debut CD, Effort of the Spin, has gotten rave reviews from critics, who describe it as "a unique introspective blend of folk and rock," with "soaring vocals and deeply felt lyrics amid an eclectic musical experience."

Described as having a "stripped-down, theatrical live

stage presenta-

ing it on its ear: "Sixteen Tons" as a tango, AC/DC as doo-wop, and liberal doses of vocalese and body percussion. Look for Throat Culture's CDs A Capella Head and Up with Angst!

Cathy 13

Cathy 13 is a hot new band fronted by Columbus native Cathy Lopienski. She is an active member of the Columbus GLBT community, serving on the Stonewall Pride Committee and acting as entertainment director for the Human Rights Campaign dinner in June.

A gifted songwriter and performer,

tion," DeChant

and her four-piece

band have enticed audiences with their intense songs, and

DeChant's striking vocal pres-

ence.

With a background in the warm acoustic vibes of Odd Girl

Out and her recent foray into more electric and edgy souns, DeChant

has a musical

quality that combines many elements along Lopienski gained experience in the Colum-

the musical spectrum.

As part of Odd Girl Out, DeChant toured extensively throughout the northeast, opening for such acts as Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLaughlin, and Melissa Etheridge.

DeChant was voted "Best Folk Acoustic Act of 1999" by the readers of Cleveland's alternative weekly Free Times. She was also voted "Best Vocalist of 1999" and "Best Folk/Americana Act of 1999" by readers of Scene Magazine. DeChant is currently recording a new CD.

Throat Culture

Throat Culture is a Columbus a capella ensemble of four men and one woman who perform an eclectic mix of originals and

covers.

The "mouth band" began performing in the fall of 1990 on a street corner in Columbus' Short North district, and since then has generated great excitement and favorable press throughout central Ohio and beyond. Throat Culture has performed in a wide variety of venues including local radio stations WSNY and WCBE, and TV, clubs, art galleries, countless civic festivals, and has opened for musical acts including the Righteous Brothers and Moxy Fruvous.

Throat Culture's material is an exercise in diversity and the unexpected, taking the tradition and culture of popular music and turn-

bus music scene playing with her acoustic pop band, the Vents, in the early '90s.

She then joined the group Radioland and performed in the 1996 Pride Rally. Lopienski enjoyed the experience of playing at Pride so much that she came back the next year to organize the rally, which featured filmmaker John Waters and Jet Jaguar 5.

Lopienski's sultry vocals have been said to be as soulful as Sheryl Crow, as angry as Alanis Morisette, but always rocking as hard as Melissa Etheridge. Cathy 13 has a new CD to be released in the fall.

Columbus Gay Men's Chorus

Also appearing in this year's Pride Celebration-before the march-is the crowdpleasing Columbus Gay Men's Chorus. Led by conductor David Monseur, the chorus has been entertaining audiences for years with their unique blend of classical vocal music and gay sensibilities. Their last concert, "What I Did For Love," showcased the chorus in an evening of songs about love, longing and friendship.

Now at over 130 members, the chorus is making a new home in the Southern Theatre where they will be presenting a July concert featuring the music of George Gershwin.
